Football in Munich
Munich is the capital of Bavarian football and one of Europe's premier sporting cities. Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena lead the city's football offering, but TSV 1860 Munich at the Grünwalder Stadion in Giesing provide a completely different experience: lower-league, compact, and full of local character.
Beyond football, Munich is one of Germany's most visited cities. The Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, and English Garden are within walking distance of each other. Beer culture is central. The Hofbräuhaus is the most famous beer hall, but locals prefer Augustiner-Keller or the beer gardens in the English Garden. In late September and early October, Oktoberfest transforms the city.
Munich Hbf is a major ICE hub connecting to Augsburg (30 min), Nuremberg (65 min), Stuttgart (120 min), and Frankfurt (195 min). This makes Munich an ideal anchor for a southern Germany football trip combining Bayern with Augsburg, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, or Freiburg.
For first-time visitors, Munich is one of the easiest cities in Germany to turn into a well-planned football trip because the non-football side is so reliable. Even if your match is the clear reason you are there, the old town, beer gardens, museum district, and day-trip options mean the travel still feels worthwhile if fixtures shift or tickets for a preferred game become difficult.
Munich also works well as a split-level itinerary city. Bayern at the Allianz Arena give you the major-club experience, while 1860 Munich at the Grünwalder Stadion offer a more local, old-school contrast if fixtures align. Add Augsburg or Nürnberg by train and Munich becomes one of the best bases in the country for three-match southern routes.
